CYDRA PRESENTATION TO LIMASSOL LADIES’ CLUB
Tuesday 4th February 2014 at St Barnabas Church, Limassol Today Barbara and Carole visited the Limassol Ladies Club at St Barnabus Church Hall. We knew it was going to be a great morning because no sooner had we arrived we were presented with coffee and beautiful homemade cakes. I could get used to this! Barbara started the presentation by telling the ladies what CyDRA actually does – and this included adoption, transport, sponsorship, supporting several rescue facilities and individuals, fostering, health care and general welfare, fund raising and financial responsibilities etc. The ladies commented that they did not realise that so much was involved in the rescue of dogs. Carole spoke about the education program – including projects such as Be a Tree, General Dog Care presentations for schools and older children and the various activities which come under Tales to Tails Therapy Dogs. She also explained about the training team at Julias and the various activities set up to encourage people to look at dogs more favourably – such as the therapy work, young animal trainers group at Julias and Animal Antics club which is to start off soon. The question time after the presentation was very active and it was wonderful so see some of the members volunteer their services in areas such as general kennel work, vet or airport runs and presentations to schools etc. At the end of the presentation the Limassol Ladies Club presented Barbara with Euros 220.00 raised by the members as a donation for Cydra and Julia’s. This was a wonderful surprise and one we truly appreciate. All in all the morning was hugely successful. Both Barbara and I had a great time – which we knew was running out when we were both still answering questions as the tables and chairs were being stacked! There is never enough time! 60’s night Fundraising event for CyDRA To quote Frankie Valli: Oh What a Night! Barbara, Carole, Eamonn and Julie arrived at the Angel Pub in Kolossi ready to enjoy a good night out with some very lovely people who wanted to raise some money for us. How did this event come about? Well, two of the organisers, Paul and Katerina, had already rescued a female pointer called Bobbi who eventually went off to live with Katerina’s mother in the Czech Republic and before travelling Bobbi had spent some time working with our CyDRA Trainer as she was a very shy dog and needed some help to boost her confidence. Then Paul made contact with CyDRA again when he came across a very sad, stray dog and he wanted to know if we could possibly help out. One of the shelters we support was able to offer a space for this little girl – but no-one expected what happened next. One dog became 10!! Whilst the dog was in the car and on her way to the shelter, Paul noticed something strange happening, one dog became, two, then three, then four………. yes, she gave birth to 9 babies in his car! What could the shelter do but agree to help with all of the dogs. All the dogs are in a shelter at the moment and the puppies are so young they have only just opened their eyes, but the mother is great with her babies. We hope that they will soon find forever homes. Paul and Katerina were so grateful to CyDRA and the shelter that they, with an amazing team of helpers, set about arranging a 60’s night to raise funds for us. We enjoyed live music from Silver Fox, a great buffet provided by the Angel Pub, an auction, and a raffle with so many wonderful prizes people needed bags to take them home! The atmosphere was lovely and the people supporting the event made us all very welcome. The truly amazing thing about the event though is that 1,165 euros was raised for CyDRA on the night, and we are awaiting the final total soon. That money will make such a difference to the work we do. There were a few tears in the eyes I can tell you, because we just did not expect such phenomenal support. CyDRA cannot say a big enough THANKYOU to Brian, Paul, Katerina, Bambos and the rest of the supporters for their generosity and kindness. Most certainly, a great time was had by all! Related...

Tomorrow on Friday 31th January 2014 the following dogs fly to Hamburg/Germany: Toby, Daniel, Dexter, Maude, Fee, Blacky, Branston, Bethany, Fashion, Toppy and Amber. They start their journey to a better life, with new families, full of love and security. We are especially happy that Toppy is leaving us to go to a proper home. The poor boy had to wait more than 5 years at the shelter. We wish that every unwanted Cyprus dog could make that journey to happiness. Some time ago a family walked with their own dog in Kolossi and came across a skinny Labrador Cross. The dog was thin but they also saw an unusually fat belly. This dog was pregnant! After the family supplied the dog with water, she followed them to the car. She probably realised that these people would be good to her. At the car they gave her some food. The family thought about what they could do with this dog and decided to take her home. They decided they could not leave this poor dog to who knows what fate. When they arrived at home, the birth began in the back seat of the car. They got her quickly into a large dog box as she had already given birth to the first puppy. Gradually, more and more puppies came into the world and in the end there were nine puppies! The puppies are all born healthy and were immediately cared for by their mummy. This female dog is a good mother. The mother dog was very lucky that she was in the right place at the right time and met these people. Who knows what would have happened to her and the puppies if she would have stayed at this location with no help. We thank the family for taking the mother dog and for the loving care of the puppies. God bless these people and all people who don´t look away in this sort of situation. Luckily the family were able to find space for the mum and puppies in a shelter, because they couldn’t keep them at home. Soon they will appear in “All dogs to adopt”. Today, 4 dogs are allowed to run towards a better life. Mini, Iris, Bobby and Bonnie were allowed to pull a ticket to freedom and will soon be in Germany, where their new families waiting for them. We are especially pleased that dogs like Iris and Bobby are allowed to leave the island. Large dogs are less often adopted than small ones. We wish you a wonderful dog’s life with your new families.
