Petra – a victim of the hunting season
Like every year after hunting season many hunting dogs were left alone by the hunters. These dogs now move back from the hunting areas towards towns and villages in search of food and water. As usual, poison is now interpreted again to poison these dogs and if these dogs eat this poison, they die a miserable death. The dogs that are not poisoned continue to search desperately for food and water and the summer comes colser, so it´s harder for them to survive. They expecting a horrible death, they starve and die of thirst. Due to the poor situation in Cyprus the animal shelters can´t be included many Pointers. The animal shelters are bursting at the seams and the re-homing of Pointers has always been difficult, thus be even more Pointers perish miserably in the ‘wilderness’ of Cyprus as in previous years Petra is one of the few Pointers that has had luck. She wandered around a hotel resort in Cyprus and a employees took her and found a place in the shelter for her. Petra was emaciated, filthy and riddled with ticks. We assume that she was already on the way for a while. After a bath and the visit to the vet – where check revealed that she is underweight but healthy – and a few nights sleeping in the shelter, Petra has quickly recovered from the exertions of her journey. Petra is a very affectionate Pointer bitch. She could quickly release her fears of us and now she loves every second she can get love and cuddles from the helpers. She is also very friendly with other dogs. Petra is now looking for a home and hopes very much there are people who want to give a lovely Pointer girl a loving home. For Petra, a dream would come true and at the same time a place would be free in the shelter for another dog. She is about 3 and a half years old. She was found and rescued and has now been some time at PAWS. She has settled in well there, but also shows a certain sadness. Although she has certainly had some bad experiences with people, she is still very fond of them. She enjoys the attention of carers and shows no panic but a degree of caution with people, which is understandable. This is typical of the hounds, because they are usually handled very strictly and know no loving care or even pats. Hera is very gentle in nature and rather quiet, as she has not yet discovered the right ‘joie de vivre’. When you such a dog a home, you know that they will repay you a thousand times over. To see a dog like Hera let out and playing for the first time is a reward in itself. Pointers are usually very willing to learn and want to please, and we see exactly these traits in Hera. One thing I know for sure is that I am one handsome boy and I’m super friendly and have been looking for a home now for over 3 years. 🙁 I don’t know why, I’m not wanted as I’m really friendly, loving, affectionate, playful and looooove cuddles! Joey is one of the many dogs which were abandoned just in front of the fence of an animal shelter. What makes the story of Joey something worse is that when he was seen by the helpers in the morning when they came to the shelter, the helpers noticed immediately that he was limping and the lower part of his right hind leg was hanging down. The immediate visit to the vet revealed that the leg is broken and he must be operated as soon as possible. The animal abandonment outside the shelters is bad enough, but with broken body parts makes it worse. We assume that he was before the helpers came, he was placed there only a short time or he just felt that he gets helped there and has remained there. We don´t know. We don´t want to imagine what would have happened to Joey, if he had gone outside of the gate. Joey was operated on immediately and now the leg needs time to heal. Joey has a lovely character. He is playful, nice to us and very addictive to our proximity. He has no problems with other dogs, quite the contrary, he enjoys every society. Because of his leg he can´t play with the other dogs yet. This makes Joey very sad. Joey is now looking for a loving home. Someone who wants to take him despite his small handicap. Related...
